Design Within Reach Inc. rode a 10%-off sales event in March to online revenue growth of 6.2% to $6.8 million in the first quarter of 2007. Online sales accounted for 15.5% of total Q1 sales, down slightly from 18.3% in the same quarter of 2006.
Overall Q1 sales for the multi-channel retailer, which specializes in designer furniture at affordable prices, reached $43.8 million, up $8.8 million, or 25.1%, from Q1 2006 sales of $35 million. Design Within Reach uses online and phone/catalog marketing to drive sales to its stores, or studios. Incremental sales generated from eight studios opened from January 1, 2006, through March 31, 2007, amounted to $2.5 million. The company had 64 studios and one outlet open at the end of the first quarter of 2007 compared to 58 studios open at the end of Q1 2006.
Phone sales generated $4.2 million in Q1 2007, down from $4.3 million compared to Q1 2006. Phone sales accounted for 9.6% and 12.3% of total sales in the respective first quarters.
