Online spending comes back

After a couple weeks of almost no growth vs. a year ago, online retail buying staged a recovery at the end of April, comScore Networks Inc. reports. For the week that ended April 27, consumers spent $889 million at online retail sites, up 15% from $775 million for the corresponding week a year ago, comScore says.

Total retail spending that week fell 3.4% vs. a year ago, reports ShopperTrak’s National Retail Sales Estimate. Taking into account that most retail stores were closed on Easter, ShopperTrak reports that the two final weeks of April showed an average increase of 2.4% over the same weeks a year ago. ShopperTrak calls the increase “moderately encouraging.”

Online travel spending for the week was up 49% over a year ago, reaching $859 million from $578 million.
