Online retail sales reached $913 million for the week that ended May 11, 11% over the corresponding week last year when sales hit $826 million, comScore Networks Inc.’s comScore Media Metrix reports. The growth rate was an easing off from the 26% experienced the week earlier, but still ahead of the low single-digit rates of the weeks during the Iraq War.
Total retail sales grew 7.9% for the week that ended May 10, reports ShopperTrak’s National Retail Sales Estimate. ShopperTrak attributes that growth to last-minute Mothers Day shopping after a slow two weeks leading up to Mothers Day.
Online travel spending for the week was up 27% to $852 million from $671 million a year ago, comScore reports. For the year, online travel spending is at $13 billion, up 28% from YTD last year, comScore says.
ComScore reports that in April, 66 million Americans--45% of the online population--visited travel web sites. Of the general travel sites, Expedia led with 14.7 million unique visitors in April. Orbitz was second with 12.9 million and Travelocity third with 11.1 million. More than 30% of visitors to one of the leading sites also visited one of the other sites.
Of the airline sites, Southwest Airlines led with 5.87 million unique visitors, followed by American with 4 million, Delta with 3.5 million and Northwest with 2.6 million.
