Two-thirds of baby boomers use the Internet

About two-thirds of adults ages 50 to 64 years old—the so-called baby boomers—use the Internet, compared with 28% of those 65 years or older, according to a recent eMarketer report. Adults 65 or older tend to make less use of the Internet because many had retired before online access became common in the workplace, the report says.

“While today’s seniors are a cautious bunch online, the next generation of seniors is not. They use the Internet at home and at work, and they will carry those usage patterns over into the next phase of their lives,” the eMarketer report says.

Boomers’ demand for online access to information will force financial services, health care, real estate and other industries to undergo massive changes, the report says.

By 2008, 73.7% of boomers are expected to use the Internet, compared with 34.1% of older seniors.
