RealNetworks Inc. is rolling out new technology that enables users to download movies or other digital content in a single click.
The recently updated RealPlayer media player application lets consumers use a single-click process to quickly download and save videos. Consumers also can download multiple videos simultaneously, burn videos to CD and send video links to others. “The new RealPlayer gives consumers more control of Internet video," says chairman and CEO Rob Glaser. "By floating a ‘download this video’ button next to video seen on thousands of web sites, RealPlayer makes it one-click simple."
The updated RealPlayer program supports videos created in most popular formats, including Flash, Windows Media, Quicktime and Real, the company says. RealPlayer also supports both downloading and recording for popular streaming formats such as Windows Media, Real, and Quicktime. RealPlayer will first be released for Windows and will work with both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. A version that will support Apple computers will be released later in the year, says Glaser.
RealNetworks, No. 94 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, sees one-click technology as a competitive edge in the growing market for digital content that can be downloaded to personal computers and handheld devices. "Time-shifting of recorded or downloaded content is a natural next step in the progression of the online video distribution and consumption," says Gartner Inc. vice president Michael McGuire. "For online video fans, the ability to capture, store and forward content is going to be transformative."
