Father’s Day spending to top both last year and Mother’s Day, survey says

This Father’s Day, the average consumer will spend more on gifts for Dad than he or she did for Mother's Day, according to a survey from the National Retail Federation -- $99.65 versus an average $97.37 actually spent on Mother's Day this year, which edges the projected average Father’s Day purchase up slightly from last year's $94.80.

12% of consumers plan to look and shop for Father's Day gifts online, and some of the gift items survey respondents plan to purchase are also some of the most popular online product categories. 20.2% plan to buy clothing, while 13.9% say they will give gift certificates and 12.4% will buy books or CDs.

The study also found that women will spend more money overall on the holiday than men will, with the average woman planning to spend $101.38, compared to $70.89 for the average man. Consumers aged 25-44 will lead Father’s Day spending, with the average person in that group planning to spend more than $130 on the holiday, the survey found.

The NRF survey, conducted by consumer market research firm BIGresearch, polled more than 8,000 consumers the week of May 8-14.
