A new CMS saves cost, boosts functionality at Code3Collectibles.com

Code 3 Collectibles, a manufacturer and retailer of limited-edition scale, die-cast vehicle models, saved significantly over the cost of its previous content management system and got more flexible functionality by switching to a content management system from Ektron Inc., according to the Amherst, NH – based technology provider. The total cost of the Ektron license was “considerably less” than the annual service contract for its previous CMS solution, according to Code 3.

Code3.net switched to Ektron’s platform after identifying several limitations of its pervious CMS. Among them, Code 3 wanted a dynamic content server instead of having to publish static images and pages from a database. The data-driven site exchanged customer and sales data constantly with servers at Code 3’s headquarters, so the CMS system had to co-exist easily with large blocks of server-side code, which the old CMS system found challenging. In addition, the previous system’s licensing agreement locked in a fixed number of users with defined levels of access, making it difficult to adapt to the changing roles of administrators, authors and editors.

Code 3 implemented the Ektron CMS in the three weeks before it relaunched its site last year. The implementation was handled with in-house staff; Code 3’s web design, development and hosting company, Webdancers; and about six hours of support purchased from Ektron.

The new system is able to handle the content generation demands of the 500,000 to 600,000 hits Code3.net typically receives every day. It’s had no adverse effect on the site’s uptime and has received few complaints on response times or performance, the company says.
