Total store sales were down 9% to $17.8 million from $19.5 million in the prior May, while comparable store sales in May decreased 8%. Total catalog/direct marketing sales, including wholesale, dropped 61% to $3.2 million from last May’s $8.3 million.
The company did not report financial results. Sharper Image, last year No. 87 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, has dropped to No. 122 in this year’s rankings.
At J. C. Penney Co. Inc. Internet sales jumped approximately 15%, on top of an increase of about 27% last year. Total direct sales decreased 5.1% in May, in line with guidance for sales to decline low- to mid-single digits, and a 1.6% increase last year. Penney said sales in the direct segment continue to be affected by softness in higher-ticket home categories and the Spring/Summer Big Book.
