Retail World Waking up to Java(TM) and XML Benefits
Flexible and Vendor-Neutral Solutions a Must, States 360Commerce Expert
Miami, FL (May 1, 2001) - Jerry Rightmer, CTO of 360Commerce, a leading provider of integrated commerce software, will present a mission-critical topic to retailers at IBM’s upcoming Store Systems User Group, May 15-17, in Miami, Florida. Rightmer will discuss the benefits and unique technical requirements of an integrated multi-channel retail architecture and how JavaTM and XML (Extensible Markup Language) address these requirements. In addition, attendees will learn about other components necessary for effective multi-channel retailing.
Whether or not to use Java-based applications and XML messaging, is a question on top of the minds of many IT professionals in the retail industry. Although many retail innovators, such as The Home Depot, Circuit City and Sears, have been early adopters of this technology, there is still a learning curve for many others. Rightmer, a strong proponent of Java and XML, plans to address common issues and questions retailers have about the most time- and cost-efficient solution to provide seamless shopping to customers. He will demonstrate how the benefits of Java and XML outweigh the costs by reducing risks and providing freedom of choice, while leveraging current technology investments.
Captivating and retaining the most profitable customers, those who shop across multiple channels, is one of the biggest challenges facing retailers today. Integrating all of those channels, while maximizing existing technology investments, is an ever-present concern among top retailers. Rightmer’s presentation will offer a solution to the integrated commerce dilemma. “Java and XML can be a powerful combination,” said Rightmer. “XML does for data what Java does for applications. Put them together and you’ve got a dynamic, flexible and vendor-neutral environment.” Rightmer will discuss the advantages of this type of flexible environment such as easier interfacing with current technology, integrating new functionality, and adapting to future needs.
Rightmer directs 360Commerce’s implementation of world-class software engineering and manufacturing techniques. He also often addresses technical issues for various trade and high tech media, as well as speaking at industry events. As the chair of the process subcommittee of the IXRetail committee, Rightmer is an active participant in the organization that is defining the emerging standard for intercommunication between retail applications. During Rightmer’s thirteen years in retail systems development, he has worked with a number of department store, mass merchant, specialty and e-commerce retailers.
Rightmer’s presentation will be on May 15, 2001. Rightmer will also be part of a panel demonstrating the power and benefits of XML on May 16, 2001. For more information on the IBM Store Systems User Group, go to www.ibmstoresystemsug.org.
