Retail kiosks to increase 69% to 105,000 by 2007, new study says

The future is bright for retail kiosks, says a new report, “Kiosk Industry Sector Report – Retail,” from Summit Research Inc. As consumers become more comfortable using kiosks to make purchases in retail locations, it says, the number of kiosks in North America will grow 69% by 2007 to 105,000 from 62,000 last year. At least 70% of these kiosks will be web-based, says president Francie Mendelsohn.

The number of retail kiosks will grow to 70,000 this year, up 13% from last year, Mendelsohn says. It will then climb to 84,000 in 2005, up 20% from 2004, she adds. “The North American marketplace represents the place of most growth in innovative projects for all types of kiosks,” she says.

The report also includes 12 case studies of retail kiosk applications, including ones deployed by Home Depot and Mazda.
