iTunes crosses the 150 million download threshold
Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes online music center has sold 150 million songs since it launched 18 months ago, Apple reported today. Users are downloading 4 million songs a week, Apple says. The pace of downloading has picked up significantly since launch. In the four months after launch last year, users downloaded 10 million songs and were buying songs at a rate of 500,000 a week.
Apple also reported that Best Buy Stores Inc. is now selling iTunes gift cards. Target Corp. and Apple retail stores also sell the cards, as does the iTunes web site.
"Crossing 150 million downloads marks another major milestone for the online music business," said Eddy Cue, Apple`s vice president of applications. The iTunes Music Store is available in the US, UK, France and Germany.
