Scholastic’s web traffic gets a boost from the Harry Potter mania

Traffic to Scholastic.com, web site of Scholastic Inc., publisher of the Harry Potter books, increased 55% last week from the week before as the frenzy among Harry Potter fans peaked in anticipation of the release of the fifth volume in the popular series, reports Internet traffic monitoring company Hitwise.

Hitwise also reports that Harry is popular with children and adults alike: 38% of visitors to the official Harry Potter web site--harrypotter.warnerbros.com--were aged 35 to 44. 62% of visitors were female. Traffic to the site grew 122% as the week progressed.

BarnesandNoble.com was the books leader in traffic growth ahead of the release, Hitwise reports, increasing its share of the books traffic by 20%. BooksaMillion.com’s share of books traffic was up 24%, Hitwise says.

Hitwise uses ISP user activity logs and opt-in panels to anonymously monitor the activities of Internet users.
