Perfumania.com reports number of Q1 orders up 30% over year-ago
The number of orders placed on Perfumania.com rose 30% for the first quarter ended May 3, while overall sales declined 8%, to $36.9 million from $40.2 million in the year-ago period, parent company E Com Ventures Inc. tells InternetRetailer.com.
"Our online growth is due mostly to affiliate partnerships and alliances," marketing manager William Portnoi says. He adds that Perfumania also runs effective sales-generating e-mail marketing campaigns.
E Com Ventures also operates more than 235 Perfumania retail stores
The company said the decline in overall sales was primarily due to a 6% drop in comp store sales--sales at stores open for at least a year--and a drop in the average number of stores in operation to 238 from 245. It blamed the declines on a contracted retail environment, inclement weather and a slow economy. The company reported a net loss for the quarter of $2.9 million, compared to a Q1 loss of $1.9 million a year ago.
