Napster lets customers transfer digital songs to cell phones

Bringing mobile digital music-players into a new realm, Napster today launched a new Napster to Go service that lets customers download digital songs from Napster.com and transfer them to an Audiovox cell phone. “We are the only ones doing this,” Napster COO Laura Goldberg tells Internet Retailer. “It lets customers use their cell phone like an MP3 player.”

The Napster to Go service lets customers download an unlimited number of songs at an introductory price of $14.95 per month. Customers can also buy songs one at a time.

After Napster customers download songs to a computer, they can use a cable to transfer the songtracks to the Audiovox SMT5600 Smartphone cell phone, which includes Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software and is available through AT&T Wireless.

The standard SMT5600 phone comes with 28.5 megabytes of internal flash memory for holding up to six songs at a time and is available for $199 after rebates and a 2-year voice and data service contract. Audiovox also makes available add-on memory chips, at about $25 each, to increase the phone’s capacity for storing music.
