Movielink goes multi-channel with Best Buy promotion

Movielink, the Internet-based digital video-on-demand service operated by several major filmmakers, has launched its first in-store promotion by offering its Movielink Movie Cards at all 642 Best Buy stores. The move follows the launch late last month of an Internet video-on-demand service by Akimbo Systems.

“This promotion with Best Buy presents a tremendous opportunity to branch out in retail stores,” said Movielink CEO Jim Ramo. “As the broadband market continues to grow, we’re always looking for new ways to expose the Movielink service to more customers.”

Movielink makes its downloads available through Movielink.com to customers with broadband web access. It charges a rental fee of $1.99 to $4.99 per download. Movielink’s owners are Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Studios.

Movielink will sell its Movie Cards as $20 gift cards through Best Buy stores. In addition, Best Buy will offer the cards for free with purchases of the Microsoft Media Center PC.

Last month, Akimbo Systems launched an Internet video-on-demand service that lets consumers with broadband access download films to the Akimbo Player for viewing on a TV. Akimbo is making its Akimbo Player, which retails for $229.99, available exclusively over Amazon.com for the 2004 holiday season. Users must also sign up for the download service on Akimbo.com and pay a $9.99 monthly fee for basic service.
