Q3 web sales at Staples rise 25% to $704 million
North American e-commerce sales at Staples Inc. rose 25% year-over-year in the third quarter ended Oct. 30, to $704 million from $565 million, Staples said today.
Total sales increased 12% to $3.8 billion from $3.4 billion a year ago, the company reports. The web accounted for 21% of all North American sales in the quarter vs. 18% a year ago.
North American e-commerce sales accounted for 64% of Q3 total direct delivery sales, including sales through Staples.com, Quill.com, StaplesLink.com and catalogs, up from 58% a year ago, the company says. StaplesLink.com processes contract sales for Staples` corporate customers.
By contrast, North American Q3 retail store sales rose 9% year-to-year, to $2.3 billion from $2.1 billion. Comp store sales rose 4%. Staples operated 1,400 North American stores as of the end of Q3 and plans to open 80 more this year. It currently operates about 1,600 stores worldwide.
