After discount stores, the Internet is the most popular shopping venue this holiday seasons, especially among high-income shoppers, says the new Deloitte & Touche Annual Holiday Consumer Survey.
53% of consumers listed the Internet as a favorite place to shop, second only to discount stores at 62%. Consumers could pick more than one favorite place. Traditional department stores were No. 3 at 45%, followed by home electronics stores at 35%, warehouse clubs at 29%, restaurants at 28%, catalog, 28%, large toy store, 27%, small apparel store, 27%, off-price store, 24%, home improvement store, 24%, and dollar store, 20%.
Consumers with incomes over $100,000 said they will spend more of their holiday shopping money online, while those with incomes under $30,000 said they will spend most of theirs in discount stores.
The survey also asked consumers to identify the one place they plan to spend the most money. Here’s what they said:
Discount store: 33%
Internet: 18%
Department store: 12%
The top reasons that consumers gave as to why they like to shop online are:
Convenience of shopping 24/7: 73%
Saves time: 68%
Less hassle/no crowds: 65%
Easier than store shopping: 49%
Find unique products not in stores: 44%
Free shipping: 42%
Easier to comparison shop: 40%
Christmas shopping doesn’t end on Dec. 25, the survey found: Shoppers will do 12% of their buying after Christmas to take advantage of sales.
