Traffic trips up some retailers at peak period

Black Monday shopping slowed down a significant number of retail web sites, according to the Gómez Holiday E-Tail performance index. 20% of retail sites monitored by Gómez experienced sluggish performance on the morning of Nov. 29, Gómez reports.

Gómez also reports that from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Nov. 29, several retailers experienced performance challenges. Application response time at two mass merchants and one computer and electronics retailer peaked to over 100 seconds, as measured from the backbone. One apparel retailer`s application response time spiked to over 50 seconds in the same time frame.

General availability of web sites remained high all day, so Gómez concludes that higher than normal traffic and not network outages were the cause of the problems. Gómez says the pattern continued throughout the week, but by Friday, performance had stabilized.

Gómez monitors availability from the last mile, meaning from a consumer’s computer to the web site and not just from the Internet backbone to the web site.
