New York City and Nigeria top the lists of web crime locations

New York has earned the worst reputation for Internet fraud of any other city in North America, and Nigeria is the nation most often cited as the starting point for such crimes. Those are among findings of an electronic commerce industry survey commissioned by CyberSource and conducted by Mindwave Research.

26% of respondents cited New York as the biggest problem among cities, followed by Miami, which was mentioned by 10%, and Los Angeles, mentioned by 9%. Chicago and Detroit tied at 3% each.

31% of those surveyed pointed the finger at Nigeria as the country not counting the U.S. and Canada that poses the greatest risk of online fraud. 8% mentioned Indonesia, 6% said Russia and 5%, China. The United Kingdom and Afghanistan were each cited by 4% of respondents.

Online merchants can require shoppers in “hot” areas to provide more elaborate identification, says CyberSource. In extreme cases retailers simply won’t ship to high-crime locations.
