U.K. consumers on track to grow online spending by 64%, trade group reports


British consumers will spend £4 billion online this November and December, projects London-based trade association Interactive Marketing in Retail Group, up 64% from the £2.5 billion spent last year in the two months leading up to Christmas.

IMRG reports that nearly half the U.K. population shops via the Internet. IMRG reports that online shopping is growing 26 times faster than offline in the U.K.

IMRG reports that Forrester Research projects that European online sales will surpass US sales, increasing 44% over last year to €13 billion compared to $13 billion (€10 billion) in the US. The UK is responsible for a third of European sales, followed by Germany with 29%, then Italy and Spain, with 4% each.
