VeriSign reports that online sales are up 15% from last holiday season

Consumers spent $4.6 billion from Thanksgiving through Dec. 12, a 15% increase compared with the corresponding period last year, says VeriSign Inc., Mountain View, CA.-based provider of online infrastructure and payment services.

In the week beginning Dec. 6, shoppers spent $2.2 billion online this year, up 15% from last year, VeriSign says. The number of transactions that week reached 28.9 million, a 21% increase from the similar period a year ago.

Monday, Dec. 6, was the peak for that week, accounting for 5.4 million transactions and surpassing the Black Monday results VeriSign collected on the Monday after Thanksgiving this year.

The average web transaction rose to $140 during the period between Thanksgiving and Dec. 12, up $10 from a year ago, VeriSign says.

“We have seen some winning categories online, including digital photography and music and video downloads,” Trevor Healy, VeriSign vice president for payment services, said in a report. “These content categories are clearly leveraging the Internet as a medium for commerce this year.”

VeriSign bases its sales data on its payments processing volume.
