Nearly half of US and UK consumers will shop online this holiday season


46% of American consumers plan to shop for retail goods or travel arrangements on the Internet this holiday season as do 43% of British consumers, says a survey just out from online payment processor and security company Retail Decisions. The proportion of Americans shopping online has gone up by half in the past year from 31% while the proportion of UK consumers has more than doubled from 21%.

Online buying habits this holiday season are similar on both sides of the Atlantic with books, flights and hotel stays featuring in the top 3 items in both countries. CDs made fifth position in both the US and the UK. Apparel was fourth in the US while DVDs/videos were fourth in the UK.

The age profile of online shoppers is also similar in both countries. The largest group is the 35- to 49-year-olds, accounting for 32% in the US and 33% in the UK. In both countries, the 50- to 64-year-olds make up 20% of the online buying population.

60% of online shoppers in the US and 57% in the UK and said there is nothing negative about the online shopping experience.
