HomeDepot.com adds online ordering to home appliance content

Shoppers visiting HomeDepot.com have been able to search for and view detailed content on home appliances on the site for some time -- now, they can order directly from the site as well. Recent enhancements to HomeDepot.com include making it e-commerce transactional for the online purchase of appliances ranging from trash compactors to microwave ovens.

“We are pleased that a growing number of consumers are shopping for appliances at The Home Depot as a result of value, innovation and convenience we offer,” says Bill Lennie, senior vice president of merchandising, Décor, for The Home Depot. “Our enhanced web site now makes it even easier for customers to investigate and buy appliances.” The Home Depot reports that offline, it has become the third-largest seller of home appliances since launching the category in its stores in 2001, with its share of that market up 40% in the third quarter of 2004 over a year ago.

The enhanced site offers improved search functionality that allows shoppers to sort by product attributes and features. A product comparison tool helps customers refine their choices and highlight key product differences. Customers placing an appliance order online receive a call from a Hone Depot associate to arrangement delivery and confirm availability, installation requirements and charges, optional service plan coverage and local sales tax.

The Home Depot notes that appliances sold online at HomeDepot.com are the same national price as those sold in its stores. Prices will not vary by region.
