Froogle, now a two-year test, gets new features

Froogle, the shopping search engine from Google Inc. named by mixing the words Google and frugal, is continuing to evolve during a public test that began two years ago this month. Froogle recently added product ratings, product reviews and a wish list, while expanding the service to the United Kingdom and Germany.

Thousands of merchants supply product feeds to Froogle to get their offerings posted. Froogle does not charge for listings, clicks or purchases, preferring to rely on paid search for revenue from the site, a spokesperson says.

The reviews on Froogle come from links to product rating web sites, and more of such sites are being sought. So far, reviews and ratings are posted only in the consumer electronics section, and a visit to the site, Froogle.Google.com, reveals that not many ratings or reviews have appeared.

The recently added wish list can help friends and family choose gifts for the user who sets up the list, the spokesperson says.

Froogle will remain a test, at least until more services are added, the spokesperson says.
