Syntegra Demystifies RFID through Managed Service for Retailers and Manufacturers

NEW YORK – January 12, 2004 – Syntegra, the $1 billion business transformation and change management subsidiary of BT Group today announced a managed service designed to help manufacturers and retailers use data from RFID readers, bar codes, and other signaling technologies to drive operational growth. Breakthrough results can be derived from increasing speed to market, avoiding out-of-stocks, and lowering operating costs through improved productivity and business processes. Syntegra’s Auto-ID Managed Service offers technology selection support, a Web interface for monitoring, capturing, and integrating data with existing supply chain applications, plus implementation and support at the client site or at a Syntegra data center.

"RFID is an unproven technology for most clients, so it’s very expensive to experiment with," notes Chris Turnquist, VP of Retail and Manufacturing at Syntegra. "Bottom line -- Syntegra can setup a service that delivers benefits without the cost, pain, and risk of doing it yourself."

RFID tags or ‘radio barcodes’ offer various advantages over conventional barcodes. Dozens can be read simultaneously, at any orientation and any location including distribution center entrances and exits, store loading bays, between fronts and backs of stores and on shelves. Tags don’t need line of sight to be read. They can be read automatically with no manual intervention. They also contain a unique serial number (known as the EPC) giving item or case level identification.

Syntegra helps retailers and manufacturers first evaluate in what amount of time they can glean an return on investment from RFID technology. Based on this knowledge, Syntegra can then assist in the integration of service that cost effectively manages data capture, shares information with customers and suppliers and complies with standards. Syntegra’s RFID starter pack helps suppliers comply with relevant standards and requirements from global retailers such as Wal-Mart and Tesco.

Syntegra is taking advantage of extensive research conducted by its parent company, BT Group, to bring clients a thorough evaluation of the numerous RFID products currently available. BT is a sponsor of the Auto-ID Center, the global entity responsible for developing the standards and protocols for RFID software and technology.

With the Auto-ID Managed Service, Syntegra has evaluated a number of RFID manufacturers based on technical performance, compliance with standards and financial stability. As standards evolve and new RFID manufacturers enter the market place, Syntegra will offer upgrades and enhancements as part of the service.

From a one-time reduction in buffer stock levels to a reduction in labor expenses and loss reduction, the move to RFID can offer substantial value to consumer products manufacturers and retailers alike. Syntegra’s parent company, BT Group, is a sponsor of a global industrial RFID research project which estimates that the annual savings for a typical manufacturer with revenue of $500 million could be as much as $2.4 million.
