The 2005 Sunrise initiative-announced by the Uniform Code Council (UCC) in 1997 -states that by January 1, 2005 all U.S. and Canadian companies must be capable of scanning and processing EAN-8 and EAN-13 symbols, in addition to the current 12-digit U.P.C. symbols. GTIN Compliance is a separate UCC initiative recommending that companies handle 14-digit GTINs. Compliance with GTIN is a pre-requisite for Reduced Space Symbology, and data synchronization using the GLOBALregistryT of UCCnet.
