Holiday order tracking at UPS.com spiked at 8.6 million a day, says UPS

Consumers like being able to track the progress of their e-retail orders online, say the latest numbers from UPS. More than 8.6 million consumers tracked their purchases at UPS.com on the tracking site’s busiest day. UPS averaged 4.8 million order-tracking inquiries a day throughout 2001. The peak day in December 2000 handled 6.5 million inquiries.

UPS also reported it delivered 19 million residential packages on its peak day during the holiday shopping season. On an average day throughout the year, UPS delivers 13.6 million packages.

UPS has offered order tracking at its site since 1995. Its tracking inquiries reached 100,000 in December 1995. In December 1998, UPS.com hit its first day with 1 million tracking inquiries.

UPS reported that for the three months ended Dec. 31, revenues totaled $8.1 billion, up 2.4% from the same period a year earlier. Consolidated operating profits declined 9.5% during the period to $1 billion. Net income declined to $645 million compared to the $724 million during the prior year.

UPS reported that the holiday season began slowly but accelerated as Christmas neared, pushed along by gains in e-commerce shipping.

For the full year 2001, revenues climbed 2.9% over the prior year to $30.6 billion. Operating profit declined 12.2% to $4 billion. Net income decreased from $2.9 billion to $2.4 billion.
