Radio Shack to launch new retail web site with GSI Commerce
RadioShack Corp. will launch in the second half of this year a new e-commerce site developed and operated by GSI Commerce Inc. under a multi-year contract, replacing the existing design of RadioShack.com, GSI said today. Consumer electronics is one of six categories GSI is targeting for growth.
RadioShack is keeping its plans for the new site close to its vest, though a GSI spokesman says the new site will retain some of the features of the current RadioShack.com. In recent years, RadioShack has designed its site to complement its policy of offering stores staffed with technology experts ready to provide technical and educational assistance to customers. For example, the site offers a detailed battery-finder that has proven helpful to store clerks as well as online shoppers, the retailer has said.
GSI expects to continue growing its consumer electronics category with additional retailers, the spokesman says. Last year, GSI expanded its apparel category by launching and operating retail web sites for Kate Spade and for Burberry.
GSI also develops and operates web sites in the categories of home-and-garden, sporting goods, beauty products and entertainment. In addition, it operates a b2b business that sells goods to, but does not develop or operate, the online operations of retailers including Sears, Kmart, Buy.com and QVC.com.
