Sport Supply Group’s holiday Amazon.com sales rise 47%
Sport Supply Group Inc., a Dallas-based manufacturer and direct distributor of sporting goods to institutions, continued its move into online consumer-direct selling with a 47% increase in holiday sales on Amazon.com’s Sports & Outdoor Store. This was the company’s second season on Amazon.com, and it had about $500,000 in sales there this holiday season, says Terrence Babilla, Sport Supply Group chief operating officer.
Sport Supply Group had revenue of almost $10 million last year on the Internet, of which about $1.5 million came from consumer-direct sales, Babilla tells Internet Retailer. The remainder came from direct sales to institutions, including schools, colleges, camps, youth leagues and government agencies, he says.
Besides working with Amazon.com, Sport Supply Group has signed on with GSI Commerce Inc., the e-commerce platform provider, to sell through GSI’s online retail partners. Babilla says he has hired a representative to place Sport Supply Group products on other retailers’ web sites for consumer-direct sales and to put goods in stores on a wholesale basis.
Institutional sales traditionally sag in the sporting goods market during the fourth quarter, and Sport Supply Group hopes to boost Q4 sales by selling to consumers during the holidays, Babilla says.
Sport Supply donated 5% of every dollar it collected during the holidays from the Amazon.com site to sending sporting goods to American troops.
