1-800-Flowers.com’s gift offering extends into wine

1-800-Flowers.com expands its flowers, gourmet foods and gift offering into wine with the acquisition of The Winetasting Network, based in Napa Valley, CA. The Winetasting Network is a distributor for more than 100 California wineries and sells direct to consumers though its own web site, Winetasting.com, as well as the Ambrosia Catalogue of Fine Wines and its web site. Terms of the transaction weren`t disclosed.

“For some time we’ve been searching for the right wine partner to support our growing gourmet food gift and gift basket categories, and to gain access to the wine club business,” says 1-800-Flowers.com CEO Jim McCann. “As demonstrated by our prior acquisitions, we can leverage our strong family of gift brands and database of more than 15 million customers, thereby driving profitable growth for The Winetasting Network.”

In addition to its core flower business, 1-800-Flowers.com’s brands include home decor and garden retailers Plow & Hearth, the Popcorn Factory, gourmet food site GreatFood.com, and children’s gift retailers HearthSong and Magic Cabin.

The Winetasting Network launched in 1991 initially as the Ambrosia Catalogue, and now includes winery and wine club direct marketing and fulfillment services. Founder Lesley Berglund will remain CEO of The Winetasting Network under the terms of the acquisition.
