REI’s web sales grow 26%
The direct sales business at Seattle-based Recreational Equipment Inc. grew 26% last year to $116 million from $92 million the year earlier, REI reported today. While the direct sales numbers include telephone and mail orders, REI.com and REI-outlet.com generate the vast bulk of the sales, the company says. Direct sales now account for 15.6% of REI’s sales, up from 13% a year ago.
Total 2001 sales increased 6% over 2000 results, to $740 million from $698 million. Net income reached $7.5 million from a loss of $11 million the year earlier. Sales in REI`s 59 stores grew 4.5%, while same-store sales grew 2%.
