UPS & eBay Extend Relationship, Expand Online Shipping Options
UPS Tools Now Available Throughout eBay Marketplace
ATLANTA, June 23, 2003 – UPS and eBay today announced they have extended their multi-year relationship and introduced a new suite of shipping tools throughout the eBay marketplace.
The new services calculate costs for various UPS and postal services, track UPS shipments, review transit times and print shipping labels, all at the point of transaction. The solution provides much greater transparency of shipping information and significantly simplifies the exchange.
For example, sellers no longer need to toggle from eBay to UPS’s Web site to process or track shipments, nor do they have to e-mail this information to their customers. Sellers also can provide buyers the capability of calculating UPS or USPS shipping costs based on their ZIP codes directly from the “View Item” page.
eBay and UPS have enjoyed a successful relationship since December 2000, when the two companies created a shipping information center on the eBay website. Last year, the two companies integrated UPS shipping tools into PayPal’s payment process.
UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew and eBay President and CEO Meg Whitman called the alliance a collaboration of two best-in-breed innovators.
“eBay and UPS both have been pioneers of the Internet economy,” said Eskew. “This latest innovation helps bring buyers and sellers closer together by synchronizing the exchange of products, information and payments, just as we do for businesses around the globe each day.”
“Further integrating UPS shipping tools into the eBay marketplace will make it much easier for eBay users to conduct their business,” Whitman said. “Together we are taking an important step forward in reducing the friction between buyers and sellers.”
Eskew underscored eBay as a valuable channel to attract more small and home-based business customers. It is the world’s largest online trading community with about 69 million registered users and 2002 net revenue of US$1.2 billion. In fact, eBay buyers and sellers bought and sold about US$14.8 billion worth of goods in 2002.
The UPS cost calculator allows sellers to enter shipping information such as weight, package size, shipping service and any handling fees when they list their items, then calculate shipping rates based on the buyer’s ZIP code and the service selected. Insurance rates can be calculated based on the final price of the item. Rates for the buyer’s selected carrier are then displayed in a calculator on the listing page and in the payment process.
There is no charge for eBay sellers to use the UPS tools in their listings. They will initially support shipments within the United States.
