Global Sports changes names and enters a new vertical market with a bang

It started as a web operations and fulfillment company for sports retailers who wanted to sell online, hence its name Global Sports Inc.

But King of Prussia, PA-based Global Sports announced today that it has signed deals to operate web stores for Comedy Central, TV Land, PAX TV and The Golf Channel under a new strategy targeting media companies and will changes its name to GSI Commerce Inc.

The new name is a reflection of the company’s move into other areas, starting last year with its acquisition of luxury retailer Ashford.com. It has now established a direct response and e-commerce division targeting media and entertainment companies. That division, Global QVC Solutions, developed in conjunction with media/home shopping company QVC Inc., will provide direct response campaigns and complete e-commerce solutions for television networks and cable channels. Global QVC will manage product development, merchandising, customer service and fulfillment for direct response campaigns developed with TV channels. The Direct Marketing Association reports the direct response television market was a $126 billion industry in 2001.
