Online auction provider eBay Inc. is extending its reach in the auction market. Collectors Universe Inc. has signed an agreement with eBay under which eBay's 42 million registered users will be able to participate in live auctions of collectibles offered by Collectors Universe.
Only a month ago, eBay and Sotheby’s agreed to have eBay host Sotheby’s online auctions and for Sotheby’s to use eBay’s technology for online bidding at live auctions in New York and London.
eBay's Live Auction technology will enable participants to place bids via
the Internet at the same time that bidders are competing in person or by
telephone.
"By collaborating with eBay, we will reach a new and larger audience for our online auction business,” said Roger Johnson, chairman and CEO of Collectors
Universe. “Our agreement represents an important step in growing the customer base for our electronic distribution channel."
The first event, scheduled for March 14, is a sports card and sports
memorabilia auction. A second live floor auction for rare coins will take
place March 23 in Baltimore.
Collectors Universe serves the high-end collectibles market. It grades and authenticates collectible coins, sports cards, stamps, and autographs.
