Amazon flows into Arizona with a new fulfillment center

Amazon.com Inc., which operates more than a dozen fulfillment centers in the U.S., plans to open a new one in Phoenix in the third quarter to handle orders for books, DVDs, music and software.

“As we continue to expand selection for customers across all product categories, we need additional capacity to accommodate current and future demand,” says Prashant Bhat, general manager for the Phoenix center. “Our new Phoenix facility will enable us to stock more of the titles our customers want, enabling us to get them their products even faster.”

The fulfillment center will cover about 600,000 square feet, which Amazon says will make it one of its larger facilities. The center will employ 300 workers full time with an additional 1,000 to 1,300 temporary workers during the 2007 holiday season.

The Phoenix facility will be operated by Amazon.com.azdc, an entity created to hold Amazon’s Arizona operations. Amazon.com is No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
