U.K. online sales grew 31% in August over August 2004

Online retail sales in the U.K. reached £1.54 billion in August, reports trade association the Interactive Media in Retail Group, up 31% over August last year. The British government reports that offline retail sales were up 0.2% in August vs. a year ago.

More than 80 online retailers contribute data that go into making up the IMRG’s estimates.

“For the second year in a row we have been pleasantly surprised by the month of August,” said Ulric Jérome, managing director of consumer electronics retailer Pixmania.com. “All weeks of August were constantly strong without any sign of decrease of orders that could have occurred due to the holiday (in the U.S.: vacation) season; which could mean that more people are spreading their holidays all around the year instead of concentrating all their free time in August. We have increased our August 2004 figures by more than 40%."

Interactive Media in Retail reports that consumers will spend £5 billion online this Christmas shopping season.
