Amazon.co.uk racks up its 5-millionth customer
Amazon.co.uk has passed the 5 million cumulative customers landmark, Amazon.com Inc. announced today. The company says it is the first European e-commerce site to serve 5 million customers. Amazon.co.uk opened in October 1998. Of the 5 million, Amazon considers 3.2 million active, meaning they’ve placed at least one order in the past year.
Amazon.co.uk also reported today that it shipped more 4.7 million items in November and December, up 38.2% from 3.4 million items in 2000. There were 17 days over the Christmas period when Amazon.co.uk shipped over 100,000 items
Amazon.co.uk recently opened a Marketplace for individuals to sell new, used and collectable items. It also recently announced strategic alliances with Carphone Warehouse, Waterstones, Virgin Wines and Expedia.co.uk.
