99 Cents Only Stores goes live with web-enabled warehouse system

To sell everything under a dollar, 99 Cents Only Stores often makes sudden purchases of merchandise at the right price. Now a new web-enabled warehouse management system is helping it quickly move products through its distribution system while accommodating its highly dynamic purchasing environment.

"Our business model is based on a lot of opportunistic purchases," said Robert Adams, vice president of information systems. "So just as our buyers have to be flexible to quickly purchase the right items, our supply chain has to be extremely flexible to support this dynamic environment."

Adams said a crucial benefit of the retailer’s HighJump Software supply chain execution system is its ability to receive incoming goods. Dock workers can use web-enabled hand-held PDAs as well as PCs to check the information on incoming shipments against back-end databases through the system’s Warehouse Advantage application, providing them to route the shipments to particular stores based on current store inventory records.

"Even when we don’t have any advance warning of incoming items, we still have to move them through the warehouse facility very quickly and efficiently," Adams said. "HighJump’s softwware solutions empower us to do that."
