Walmart.com becomes the 27th retailer to adopt Verified by Visa

Walmart.com is the newest retail supporter of Verified by Visa, a security program that requires cardholders to key in a password to authenticate online purchases. Walmart.com had to implement a software package onto its web system in order to accept the Verified by Visa transactions. The software triggers a popup window that asks consumers to key in a password for their credit card, which they receive from their bank-card issuers when they register for the card security program.

Visa developed the Verified by Visa program to spread online fraud liability to parties other than just the retailers. The Verified by Visa program sends the passwords to the card-issuing bank to verify that the card user is authentic. If the password does not match the one on file at the issuing bank, the transaction does not take place, thus avoiding potential fraud from chargebacks and unauthorized purchases. Consumers have zero liability for online fraud.

Currently, 27 online retailers support Verified by Visa and ten more are expected to go live soon, Visa says. Major retailers that support Verified by Visa include Target.com, eBag.com, BlueFly.com, CDNow, ticket.com and 1-800-Flowers. Upcoming retailers include Orbitz.com, eLuxury.com and Walgreen.
