With 10 million downloads in four months, iTunes proves to be a chartbuster

Music fans apparently are willing to pay for digital music. Apple Computer Corp.’s online iTunes Music Store reports that customers have purchased more than 10 million songs since the site was launched only four months ago. On average, customers have downloaded more than 500,000 songs a week.

"Legally selling 10 million songs online in just four months is a historic milestone for the music industry, musicians and music lovers everywhere," said Steve Jobs, Apple`s CEO.

Music fans pay 99 cents per song.

The online music store offers songs from major and independent music labels, personal use rights, and one-click download directly into Apple`s integrated digital jukebox software, iTunes. Customers can burn songs at no extra cost onto an unlimited number of CDs for personal use, play them on up to three computers, and listen to them on an unlimited number of iPods.

In addition to the iTunes store, Apple provides the iTunes digital music jukebox and the iPod digital music player. Apple says the iTunes Music Store will be available to Windows users by the end of this year.
