Online spending up 13% in week ending Aug. 31


Online retail spending grew 13%, reaching $1 billion, for the week ending Aug. 31 from $845 million in the corresponding week a year ago, comScore Networks Inc.’s Media Metrix division reports. The growth was rapid recovery from the anemic 5% growth the prior week.

Total retail sales the week ending Aug. 30 grew 1.3%, the lowest year-over-year growth since the week of May 17, according to ShopperTrak’s National Retail Sales Estimate.

Online travel sales for the week were up 22% to $685 million from $576 million, comScore reports.

ComScore gathers its numbers by monitoring the online behavior of Internet users, who have consented to allow comScore to track them anonymously. Its numbers do not include retail or surplus sales at eBay.com.
