Ebates.com doubles membership in year

Consumer registrations at online shopping aggregator and rebate site Ebates.com has reached 6.3 million, Ebates reported today, up from 4.7 million only six months ago and 3.4 million a year ago. Participating merchants now number 712, the company said, up from 670 a year ago. Ebates started four years ago and signed up 600,000 users and 600 merchants in its first year.

Among the most recent merchants joining Ebates are BootBarn, FAO Schwartz, Foot Locker, Frommers, HP Shopping, Lancome, ProGolf, The Fright Catalog, 1-800-Wheelchair, WebMedRX, and Western Warehouse.

Ebates refunds a portion of the purchase price to members every time they buy something at a participating merchant. Ebates earns commissions from retailers and rebates part of that back to members.

"The end result is lower prices on everything, not just sales or clearance items," said Paul Nichols, director of business development. "This simple innovation has driven our explosive growth for over four years."
