After a 10-month lull, Albertsons.com expands again

Building from its base on the West Coast, Albertsons Inc. is moving its Albertsons.com online grocery shopping service to the east. The latest market: Boise, ID, its headquarters city. Online ordering and home delivery will be available to13 ZIP Codes. The expansion increases to eight the number of major metropolitan areas that it is serving. It’s the first expansion of the service since Albertsons.com moved into Las Vegas last November.

Albertsons fulfills orders from one of its stores and offers customers the option to have orders delivered or to pick them up at one of 15 stores. Albertsons charges $9.95 for delivery and $4.95 for pick-up.

Albertsons is offering a variety of incentives the first four weeks of the service. This week, customers who spend $50 on Albertsons.com will receive a free case of Aquafina water. Next week, customers who spend $50 will receive a free dozen red roses. Week of Sept. 30, customers who spend $50 will receive free a half gallon of Dreyer`s ice cream. And during the week of Oct. 7, $50 in spending will get customers a free gourmet apple pie. It will promote the offers in weekly mailers and newspaper ads.

As part of the launch, Larry Johnston, Albertsons chairman and CEO, and Bob Colgrove, president of the Intermountain Division, personally made the first delivery.

"We have been pleased with our Internet shopping results in Seattle, San Diego, Southern California, Portland, Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area, and we believe we will achieve great success in our own backyard of Boise," Colgrove said.

Albertsons.com was launched in Seattle in November 1999. The company expanded its online service to 146 ZIP Codes in San Diego County in October 2001, and added approximately 400 ZIP Codes in Southern California in February 2002. In March 2002, the service was expanded to 53 ZIP Codes in the Portland/Vancouver area and over 100 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Las Vegas’s 84 ZIP Codes were added in November.
