Bluefly.com names former Spiegel CEO as president

Pureplay e-retailer Bluefly Inc., which sells fashion apparel at discount prices through Bluefly.com, has hired Melissa Payner-Gregor, former CEO of Spiegel Catalog Inc. and a 23-year veteran of apparel retailing, to fill the newly formed role of president. Payner-Gregor reports to CEO Ken Seiff.

Payner-Gregor, who was also named to Bluefly’s board of directors, will be responsible for all merchandising, marketing and e-commerce operations. “Her proven success at building profitable merchandising strategies and her direct marketing background will add significant new expertise to our management team,” Seiff said. Payner-Gregor’s experience in working with designers’ brands will strengthen Bluefly’s relationship with the design community, he added.

At Spiegel, Payner-Gregor oversaw the catalog, Internet and outlet store operations of the apparel and home-furnishings retailer, which does about $700 million in annual sales. In her six years there, Spiegel reduced costs, expanded margins and accelerated growth while simultaneously increasing Spiegel’s online share of business, Bluefly said in a statement.

Although Payner-Gregor is steeped in multi-channel retail experience, Bluefly, which had sales of $30 million last year, has not announced any plans to expand beyond its business model of selling designer closeouts through its web channel. Prior to Spiegel, Payner-Gregor served as president of apparel retailer Chico FAS Inc. and held senior management positions at Guess Inc., Neiman Marcus division Pastille and Henri Bendel.
