No let-up in 2002’s torrid online shopping growth
The e-retailing boom that has been developing since the start of the year shows no sign of letting up, say the latest numbers from BizRate.com Inc. The growth is not being driven by any particular category but is strong in a number areas, BizRate numbers show.
For the week ending last Saturday, total e-commerce sales were up 69% to $1.02 billion from $609.2 million for the same week last year, BizRate says. The number of orders for the week reached 8.5 million, up 62% from 5.2 million the year earlier. Average purchases increased 4% to $120.82.
For the year so far, sales are up 44% to $15.1 billion from $10.5 the year earlier. The number of orders is up 36% to 119.6 million.
Categories with the biggest increases last week were food and wine, which was up 169%; gifts and flowers, up 122%; and electronics, up 99%. Those with the lowest increase or a decrease were health and beauty, which was up 8%; apparel, which was flat; and office supplies, down 4%.
