Spurred in part by web sales that have risen 49% year to date over last year, garden and lifestyle retailer Smith & Hawken recorded a record 36% sales growth in August over August of 2002, the Novato, CA-based company reports. The multi-channel retailer, which began as a catalog company, now operates 53 stores as well as a web site and catalog.
Last year, under a new management team, the company boosted its online efforts in time for the holidays and saw a 40% increase in web sales over the previous holiday season. In addition, the company is pursuing offline expansion, opening seven new stores since last year and planning to open three more before the end of the year.
“We’re finally putting our almost 25 years of gardening experience to work by exposing more products to more and more consumers,” says CEO Barry Gilbert. “This year we really started to see the success of delivering new, high-quality garden inspired products. I think we’ve really got the right team to implement both the product development and the execution.”
The company says catalog and store sales have been increasing as well. Privately held Smith & Hawken doesn’t release financial data.
