Latest worm not harming Internet, Keynote reports

Consumers have reason to be concerned about how today’s threatened Kama Sutra Worm will affect their PCs, but the effect on the Internet has been nil, says Keynote Systems Inc., web site performance and management company. “Keynote has seen no effect whatsoever on the performance or availability of its Keynote Business 40 Internet Performance Index, which is a proxy for the Internet as a whole and does reflect major events when they do happen,” Keynote said in a release.

It added, “We expect this to be non-event for overall Internet performance, because of the way this particular worm operates. This worm sends e-mail messages that use a small amount of bandwidth. So as the worm goes into action and proceeds to a user’s PCs, it should not have any effect on the overall performance of the Internet. Nor do we expect to see high profile web sites affected.”

Keynote cautioned that consumers are correct to be concerned about their own PCs. “The Kama Sutra worm is actually old mail worm technology and CAN damage your personal computer when sprung to life. To become infected a user must click on and open the e-mail which says something like ‘to view naughty pictures, click here’. Once you do that, the worm captures your address book and sends itself automatically to all your contacts. When the worm goes into action it does destroy and overwrite files on your PC as well,” Keynote said.
