Sinking catalog sales shift to the web at J. Crew

A decline in catalog sales virtually matched the growth in web sales at J. Crew Group Inc. for the quarter that ended May 4, J. Crew reported today. Catalog sales were down $5.4 million and web sales were up $5.9 million.

Internet sales reached $31.2 million, up 23% from $25 million in last year’s comparable quarter. Total sales in the quarter were virtually flat, reaching $56.2 million from $55.7 million a year ago. Catalog sales were off 18%, $25 million this year vs. $30.4 million a year ago.

In the quarter, web sales accounted for 18.7% of J. Crew’s total revenue vs. 15% a year ago.

A similar pattern held in April, when Internet sales were up 25% to $9.4 million from $7.5 million and total sales were flat at $29.3 million vs. $28.9 a year earlier. Catalog sales dropped 11.6% to $7.6 million from $8.6 million a year ago.

In addition to the web site and catalog, J. Crew operates 143 retail stores and 41 factory outlet stores. Comparable store sales fell 13% in the quarter.
