Best Buy smooths out shipping within the corporation

Best Buy Co. Inc. has streamlined distribution of packages from headquarters to store and store to headquarters with United Parcel Service’s new CampusShip product, Jim Hay, general transportation manager of Best Buy, tells Internet Retailer.

The web-based shipping service has made shipping packages more efficient and virtually eliminated bad and unreadable addresses, Hay says. “The benefits have been outstanding,” he says. “No longer do we have hand-written airbills that can be misread when re-keyed into the UPS system.” In addition, the product contains address databases, including one that contains all the addresses of Best Buy locations to ensure that the shipper has the correct address.

Furthermore, management, the sender and the recipient all have complete information to manage shipping and track packages. “Management can audit the packages to keep track of who sent what to whom and when,” Hay says. “The person receiving the package can receive an e-mail with the tracking.”

Best Buy uses the CampusShip product, named to indicate its use within a corporate campus, at all stores, district and regional offices and a large portion of administrative areas at headquarters.

Implementation was easy, Hay says. Training consisted of screen shots to walk users through the process. “We had less than 12 phone calls the first 30 days out of over 700 installed site,” he says.
