Consumer buying drives 16% growth in PC sales, IDC says

Worldwide shipments of personal computers rose 15.7% year-to-year in the third quarter, to 38.4 million units, driven by sales of consumer laptop computers, IDC says. Growth in PC sales of 16.1% in the U.S. and 17.5% in Europe helped drive up global sales higher than an earlier forecast of 10.4%.

"We continue to see phenomenal growth in portables," said Loren Loverde, director of IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. "Consumers in particular have reacted to low prices and wireless features. Although commercial spending remains cautious, even this segment is making some progress."

IDC says leader Dell Inc. experienced overall growth in PC sales of 27.9%, but 28% worldwide growth at Hewlett-Packard Co. cut Dell’s global lead in number of orders to 127,000, or a market share edge of 0.3%, IDC says.

Following are the top five vendors in third-quarter PC shipments cited by IDC, with number of shipments, percentage of global growth in number of shipments Q3 2003 over Q3 2002, and market share:
• Dell, 6.7 million, 27.9%, 17.4%;
• HP, 6.5 million, 28%, 17.1%;
• IBM, 2.3 million, 15.6%, 5.9%;
• Fujitsu Siemens, 1.5 million, 13.3%, 4%;
• Toshiba, 1.3 million, 7.8%, 3.3%;
• All others, 20 million, 9.5%, 52.4%.
